KAYA YANAR, stand-up comedian
Kaya Yanar who was born 10 May 1973 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is a Turkish-German comedian best known for his comedy show Was guckst du? (Whaddaya lookin’ at?). Yanar’s parents are of Turkish origin and immigrated to Germany. He is famous for the German comedy show “Was guckst du?”, which covers sketches about pretty much every cliché out there. He is the host as well as the main comedian for most of the sketches.
For one of his most famous sketches about an East Indian, Ranjid, and his cow-pal Benita, he had to study for months to perform the sketch with a perfect Pidgin-English accent. His fellow student, who fluently speaks with this East Indian accent was a huge help for his studies. He went to the “Heinrich-von-Gagern-Gymnasium” (High School) and later on went to study Phonetics, American studies and Philosophy without graduating at Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main. During his high school years he once said to his teacher “I want to become a comedian.” which simply made his teacher laugh out loud. During an interview with the famous German TV-host Johannes B. Kerner Yanar, who doesn’t speak any Turkish, described his childhood as a more liberal one. Yanar’s show has played a crucial part towards the acceptance of multicultural humor in Germany. In 2006 Yanar ended his comedy show to pursue the filming of a movie not yet released.
