ALBERT GUVENIS, PhD, Dr, Biomedical Engineering

Dr. Guvenis was born in Istanbul on April 4, 1955. He finished the Saint Michel high school where he received a prize as the best mathematics student. He then studied electrical engineering at Bogazici University and continued his studies at Drexel University in Philadelphia where he received his Msc and PhD degrees.

After graduation, he became a faculty member of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he held a tenure track position of Assistant Professorship. He conducted research on Positron Emission Tomography in the Department of Radiology of the same hospital.

Dr. Guvenis continued his work on medical imaging and biomedical engineering at Bogazici University Istanbul where he is currently teaching. He has been very active in promoting quality assurance and the use of medical computing in the Turkish Healthcare System. He is the founder and the head of the new Master of Science Program in Medical Systems & Informatics.

Dr. Guvenis has a number of international publications and is on the scientific committees of national and international yearly conferences such as BIYOMUT Istanbul, ICICTH Samos, Greece and the International Conference on Medical Informatics in Antalya.

BANU ONARAL, Prof, Ph.D., H.H. Sun Director of School of Biomedical Engineering Science and Health Systems at Drexel University

Professor Banu Onaral, leads the research team developing a hand-held breast cancer scanner which fits in your handbag. The ground-breaking technology, to be sold in High Street chemists, could be used by women of all ages but could be particularly useful for younger and pre-menopausal women who are currently not screened for cancer.

Dr. Onaral is H. H. Sun Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering at Drexel University. She holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and BSEE and MSEE in Electrical Engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey. Dr. Onaral joined the faculty of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Biomedical Engineering and Science Institute in 1981. She has served as the founding Director of the School of Biomedical Engineering Science and Health Systems since 1997.

He has finished his classes towards his PhD at Marmara University Institute of Banking and is at his thesis stage to get this degree which is still pending.

UC Riverside Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering Mihri Ozkan, who conducts multidisciplinary research in fields ranging from next-generation computer chips to new medical treatments, received the Emerging Scholar award for 2005 from the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

The national award recognizes the early professional achievement of an untenured woman scholar who has demonstrated excellence in research and teaching and exhibits a commitment to women’s issues in the profession or in the community. (more…)
