HAKAN GÜRSU, Dr.,PhD, industrial product designer


Hakan Gursu was born on 1959 in Istanbul. He graduated from Middle East Technical University as first rank student in 1987. He took his master’s degree from Department of Architecture in 1988. Gursu continued his project studies at Japan in 1991 and completed his Ph.D studies in 1996. he worked as consultant on interior architecture and city planning in Moscow and Tokyo. Dr.Hakan Gursu, has been awarded in national and international competitions for several times in the scope of space and product design issues. Most remarkable ones are Pioneers of Design (Japan Industrial Designers’ Association/Japan) and, first rank in several international and national design competitions. He contributed in the design of registered product design in the context university and industry collaboration. Still he is going on his duties as an instructor in the Department of Industrial Design in METU and Designnobis.

Dr. Gursu was was the recipient of the world’s most prestigious design award, the International Design Award (IDA) 2007, for his creation ‘Volitan’, in the category of best nautical vessel and best transportation vehicle of the year.

ALBERT GUVENIS, PhD, Dr, Biomedical Engineering

Dr. Guvenis was born in Istanbul on April 4, 1955. He finished the Saint Michel high school where he received a prize as the best mathematics student. He then studied electrical engineering at Bogazici University and continued his studies at Drexel University in Philadelphia where he received his Msc and PhD degrees.

After graduation, he became a faculty member of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he held a tenure track position of Assistant Professorship. He conducted research on Positron Emission Tomography in the Department of Radiology of the same hospital.

Dr. Guvenis continued his work on medical imaging and biomedical engineering at Bogazici University Istanbul where he is currently teaching. He has been very active in promoting quality assurance and the use of medical computing in the Turkish Healthcare System. He is the founder and the head of the new Master of Science Program in Medical Systems & Informatics.

Dr. Guvenis has a number of international publications and is on the scientific committees of national and international yearly conferences such as BIYOMUT Istanbul, ICICTH Samos, Greece and the International Conference on Medical Informatics in Antalya.

TEKİN ÖZERTEM, PhD, Dr, children books, script writer; playwright; producer

Tekin OzertemHe was born in Izmir in 1947. He graduated from University of Ankara, Faculty of Language and Geography. He has three diplomas from department of Theatre; department of Classis Roman Language and Department of History of Greek Literature.

Later, he attended a PH. D. Program on Children Theatre. He worked for long years at Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) where he started as a producer and script writer then became Ankara Television Director. In 1978, he prepared and brought to life international 23rd April Children Festival. And for 12 years he was the president of the organization committee for the festival. He also represented TRT at European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

During his career, he wrote may children plays as well as scripts for television and cinema.

CAN ERBİL, Ph.D. Boston College, Assistant Professor of Economics, Brandeis University

Can ErbilCan Erbil specializes in international trade and development economics with a focus on trade liberization, tax reforms, and macroeconomic policy recommendations in an open economy framework. In his research he employs advanced economic modeling tools such as CGE models and integrated modeling platforms, as well as intuitive and simple innovations such as the “debt burden index” (see recent paper with Ferhan Salman titled “Revealing Turkey’s Public Debt Burden - A Transparent Payments Approach,” forthcoming in JPM).

For the last four years, Can Erbil has been working as a full-time faculty at IBS and the Department of Economics at Brandeis University. Erbil teaches courses in international trade and globalization (graduate level), development economics (graduate and undergraduate), econometrics (graduate and undergraduate - at Brandeis and Harvard), microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative analysis (graduate level), economic modeling with general equilibrium: theory and practice (Ph.D. level), political economy (graduate level) and international monetary economics and finance (at Harvard University).

Can Erbil is also a Research Fellow at EcoMod, Global Economic Modeling Network, where he is involved in research and teaching on economic modeling. EcoMod is based in Brussels.

BANU ONARAL, Prof, Ph.D., H.H. Sun Director of School of Biomedical Engineering Science and Health Systems at Drexel University

Dr. Onaral is H. H. Sun Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering at Drexel University. She holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and BSEE and MSEE in Electrical Engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey. Dr. Onaral joined the faculty of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Biomedical Engineering and Science Institute in 1981. She has served as the founding Director of the School of Biomedical Engineering Science and Health Systems since 1997.

Designer at Brown Boveri/Switzerland. Lt.Eng. in the Turkish Army in Iskenderun 1960-62. Bechtel & Co. in Montreal and J.J.Henry in Philadelphia. U.S. Naval Forces and promotion with Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania. Retired as Prof.Eng.
